Warts
Warts are small, raised growths with a rough surface, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and most often appearing on the hands and feet. They may be round or oval, and lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. A harmless wart doesn't require removal, but it's reasonable to have one evaluated if it bothers you.
When to come in
MedlinePlus recommends contacting a provider if a wart shows:
- Signs of infection: redness, streaking, pus, discharge, or fever
- Bleeding that doesn't stop with light pressure
- Pain or discomfort
- Any change in color or appearance
- Location in a sensitive area, or occurring alongside diabetes or a weakened immune system
