Moles (Nevi)

Moles are brown or black growths that can be flat, raised, rough, or smooth. They form when melanocyte cells cluster together instead of spreading evenly across the skin. Adults with light skin often have more moles, sometimes 10 to 40 of them, and it's normal for a mole to gradually darken or lighten over time.

When to come in

A change to a mole, or a new mole, is often the first sign of melanoma. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it's worth having evaluated promptly if you notice a mole or spot that is:

Growing
Itching
Bleeding
Changing in any way: shape, color, or texture
